History, Mission and Vision
Brief History of Our College
Thunchan Memorial Government College was started in the year 1980. The decision
to start a Government College was the long cherished dream of a group of socially
committed visionaries of this area. It was materialized as the result of the fusion
of their enthusiasm, hard work, diligence and zeal. Apart from the primary aim of
imparting knowledge, this institution has been visualized to play a more significant
role, namely the improvement of the otherwise educationally backward Malappuram
District in general and the coastal belt of Tirur Taluk in particular. The College
was inaugurated by the then Educational Minister of Kerala, Sri. Baby John. For
the present generation, it might be a surprise to learn that this prestigious College
had a very humble beginning. With no separate building of its own at that time,
the classes were initially held in the few class rooms of the nearby Paravanna Government
High School. One of the rooms of the nearby Master's Lodge served as the make-shift
office room of the College. In 1981, t his College was aptly christened as Thunchan
Memorial Government College, thus honoring the father of modern Malayalam Language,
whose birthplace is Tirur. Thanks to the untiring enthusiasm and efforts of the
College Sponsoring Committee, the College was shifted to its new premises by 1984.
The Committee received generous helps from the public by way of donation. 22.5 acres
of salubrious land at Vakkad was purchased and a College building was constructed
on the land at the cost of Rupees five lakhs. 17th November 1984 is a memorable
day in the annals of the College. On this day, the College started functioning in
its own building. Thus the present College Campus came into existence The Sponsoring
Committee is also credited with arranging the infrastructure and providing the necessary
facilities so that the Pre-Degree Courses in Humanities (Third Group) and Commerce
(Fourth Group) could be started immediately. With unbounded gratitude we remember
all the members of the Sponsoring Committee whose yeoman services contributed to
the birth and step by step growth of the College. These members did the spade work
for developing the College into a good temple of learning. We are grateful to each
of them.

The year 1991 was another milestone in the history of the College. It was in this
year that Sri. E. T. Mohammed Basheer, the then Educational Minister of Kerala declared,
at a function, the sanction of the first Degree Course, viz, B. A. Arabic in the
College. Along with this, the College was also sanctioned B. Com. The College was
thus upgraded to the status of a Degree College. The need for introducing new courses
in science subjects in the College was realized and during the academic year 1993-'94,
B. Sc. Mathematics was introduced, followed by M. Sc. Mathematics in the year 1995-'96.
This marked the beginning of the first Post-Graduate Government College in Malappuram
District. The following years saw the commencement of other new courses in the College.
B. A. Malayalam course was sanctioned by the then Educational Minster Sri. P. J.
Joseph in the year 1999 and its inauguration was done by the Minister of Local Self
Government Sri. Paloli Mohammed Kutty. In 2004-'05, B. Sc. Physics was added to
the list of courses in the College. At present the College has 5 U. G. Courses and
one P. G. Course. Even after upgradation to the level of a Degree College, the infrastructural
facilities available to the College are still inadequate. Yet, we are proud to say
that this has not adversely affected the academic output of the College. We have
not looked back since we cut our teeth in the educational firmament in 1980. Our
students have secured the top University ranks and brought credit to the College.
They have also excelled in extra-curricular activities. The spirited endeavor of
the students, teachers and people of this locality has earned the College a prominent
niche in the educational map of Malappuram District. Yet the College is still in
its formative phase and has to grow. The need of the hour is adding sufficient infrastructure,
introducing new courses with emphasis on job opportunities and modern thrust. We
firmly believe that Thunchan Memorial Government College is destined to spearhead
the educational empowerment of Tirur which still remains backward socially, economically
and educationally. It is a beacon of hope to the people of this area. It will stand
out as a sprawling banyan tree in the future, shedding the exuberance of learning
to thousands of students and to posterity. Finally we gratefully acknowledge the
efforts of those administrators, legislators, former staff, people of the locality
etc. who have shown interest and contributed in the growth of the College to the
present status. Though the permission of the Government is required in all policy
matters, the Principal, teachers, office and students will strive hard for attaining
higher goals and ambitions, and work for the steady growth of this Institution.
Thunchan Memorial Government College, Tirur, established in 1980, has completed
35 years of dedicated and glorious service to the cause of higher education in one
of the most socially and economically backward area, Vettom Panchayath of the District
of Malappuram, Kerala. The history of the institution is closely related to the
history of educational progress of the people of the district in general and that
of the educationally and economically backward communities in particular. The College
attracts students from an area stretching over 20 sq. kms. and enjoyed the status
as the only institution for higher education of the people from more than a dozen
Grama Panchayaths until recently. The establishment of the College owes to the keen
desire of a group of people of this area to uplift the marginalized fishermen community
and other backward communities, who was thrown out off from the main stream of social
progress for reasons historical. Since economic backwardness goes hand in hand with
educational backwardness, the establishment of a centre for higher education was
the need of the hour for the economic empowerment of all socially marginalized groups
who had so far been deprived of their right to education and employment. Thunchan
Memorial Government College, Tirur was started as a junior college with Pre-Degree
course in the year 1980. The enrolment over the years reveals that the college has
made substantial contribution for the education of women, especially girls from
educationally and socially backward and minority communities. The college was upgraded
into a Degree College in the year 1991 with two courses B.A. Arabic and B.A. Malayalam
and into P.G. College in the year 1995 by introducing M.Sc. Mathematics. The college
now offers 5 UG and 4 PG programmes. 700 students, 32 qualified and competent teachers
and 12 nonteaching staff form part of the teaching learning process. The college
has made enviable progress in terms of physical infrastructure and learning resources.
